Alta Ski Area- Utah Day 5
01-19-05 Ed and Chris park the Jeeps at the Motel and head for Salt Lake to pickup Ryan and then onto Alta. You know that you have a great ski area when you spend the day and you haven't been on a trail all day.
Ryan, Ed and Chris ready to rip. 35F and sunny skies.
Ryan checks the snowpack in one of the many chutes. Excellent snowpack but no loose snow. Great ski conditions for eastern skiers.
Chris in one of the chutes. This one was easy to get into. Some have tricky entry points.
Ryan carving it up. We did find some great bowl skiing too.
Ryan and Chris climbing up to "Gunsight". A great chute that doesn't see a lot of traffic because of the climb.
Maniacs jumping off rocks as the sun sets. Only in Utah...
Poison Spider-Golden Spike- Gold Bar Rim Trails (Again)
Ryan guides the CJ-7 up the entrance to Poison Spider Mesa trail. If you look closely you'll see the morning frost on the trail- all the way up. The slickrock is slippery enough, but the frost makes it almost impassible. This corner doesn't get the sun till late in the day and we wanted an early start. Actually Ryan wanted an early start. Ed and Chris had already had their experiences here a few days before. But no trip to Moab is complete without driving over the, "Golden Crack".
Ryan and Chris being framed as they check the best decent route.
Route 191 to Moab below. That was our access road. This is not the high point of the trail either. The Gold Bar rim trail is, which is still 5 hours away.
